Frequently Asked Questions

How do I care for my Fairmont Designs products?
For our wood products:
  • To clean, simply use a soft cloth moistened in lukewarm soap and water then buff with a dry, clean cloth.
  • NEVER use glass cleaners on finished furniture, ammonia will chemically attack the lacquer.
  • NEVER allow liquids of any kind to remain in decorative route lines; absorption causes wood to warp and finishes to de-laminate.
  • Prevent marking by not writing directly on the surface.
  • Prevent fading by not placing the item in direct sunlight.
  • Prevent discoloring by using cloth placemats rather than rubber-based ones.
  • Prevent yellowing by not using commercial waxes and polishes.
  • Prevent damage to the finish by not placing hot metals, such as pots or kettles, on the surface.
  • Prevent splitting by maintain even humidity conditions in your home. For our natural stone products:
  • Generally, the best care for natural stone is to keep it clean and buffed. Especially around faucets, wiping off the water will prevent a mineral buildup (a whitish, dull residue on the stone).
  • For cleaning marble, always use a pH neutral cleaner. Any acid cleaner will damage the stone.
  • Acid does not harm granite, but oil will soak in, leaving a darker area. Wipe up oils, spills, and splatters immediately, using a mild household cleaner. Rinse and buff dry.
  • We recommend using a resin-based penetrating sealer to reseal the stone. All natural stone is porous and needs to be sealed periodically to prevent staining liquids from penetrating. Sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface, if they bead up then the sealer is adequate. If they quickly soak in, it is time to reseal the stone.

  • For our fabrics:
  • Prevent fading by not placing the item in direct sunlight.
  • Loose seat cushions should be turned over periodically.
  • An occasional "once over lightly" with a soft brush vacuum attachment will prevent dirt from being forced into fabric.
  • If spills occur, blot immediately. Use a professional furniture cleaning service when an overall soiled condition has been reached. Contact your authorized Fairmont Designs dealer for the cleaning code to your fabric. Do not launder fabric     cushions.

What are the differences between English and French dovetail construction?

A dovetail joint is a locking joint. The English dovetail construction tends to allow for the largest possible drawer storage capacity. French dovetail construction is used for more elaborate features such a curved, bowed design. Please see the pictures below:
